Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is for adults, ages 18 and older, experiencing psychiatric or substance abuse problems. The schedule of day and evening programs allows adult IOP patients to receive treatment that addresses a broad range of psychiatric or addiction issues while continuing to meet family and work obligations. We offer a range of different IOP treatments to address the unique needs of adults.

The Intensive Outpatient Program is the least restrictive level of care. The program allows people to receive treatment that addresses a full range of psychiatric and addictive issues while performing daily family and work obligations.

  • IOP features a group setting that occurs three hours per day, three to five days a week. Treatment may last between four and six weeks, depending on individual needs and payment options.
  • Initially, IOP requires four to six days of attendance and tapers to three days as patients progress through the program as patients simultaneously connect with an outpatient provider.
  • IOP consists of two specialized tracts that patients may choose from: mental health (MH) or substance use disorder (SUD).

IOP schedule options:

  • Day: 9:00 AM to 12 noon, Monday through Friday
  • Evening: 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday through Friday

Levels of Care

Intensive outpatient treatment is a great step-down from inpatient treatment, as well as a solid entry point on the journey to recovery. We provide multiple types of treatment throughout multiple levels of care for all patients if needed.

In addition to outpatient day treatment, we offer partial hospitalization programs and inpatient treatment for mental health issues and substance abuse. For those suffering from substance abuse, short-term inpatient treatment may be recommended.

Inpatient Adult Substance Abuse Treatment

Our physician-led, twelve-step adult substance abuse program addresses the adult’s entire wellbeing, including medical, psychiatric, and social needs. We begin by developing an individualized treatment plan which focuses on the identified behavioral challenges of each patient. Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual and involves their input. Each patient has the freedom to examine which thought processes are harming their ability to cope and recover. As such, the plan may include a wide variety of evidence-based therapies. Treatment may consist of medication management overseen by the psychiatrist who meets with each patient weekly. Therapists meet with each patient daily. The average length of stay for this program is five days.

Treatment consists of a psychiatrist-led multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals consisting of:

  • A board-certified psychiatrist who is also a Certified Addictionologist
  • Nurses
  • Case coordinators
  • Licensed social workers
  • Mental health technicians
  • Licensed recreational therapists
  • Substance abuse counselors
  • Certified yoga instructor

Patients participate in different elements of the program based on their individual needs, including:

  • Medical detoxification
  • Group therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Psychiatric education
  • Nursing education
  • Substance abuse education
  • Relapse prevention
  • Medication management
  • Dietary counseling
  • On-campus support by Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous or Al-Anon

Group Therapy: Led by licensed therapists, there are two structured groups per day in which consist of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

Social service group: These groups involve talk therapy, and light physical activities and focus on the aspects of recovery.

Mental health group: Through the application of music or video to explore ways to manage anxiety or depression, therapists use mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to guide patients to retrain negative ways of thinking.

Recreational Therapy: Licensed recreational therapists deliver daily programs consisting of group and individual activities designed to develop coping skills necessary to recovery. This form of therapy includes:

  • Yoga, stretching, meditation, and deep breathing.
  • Art therapy, including painting, music, and journaling.

Family Support: We recognize the importance of family involvement and support in the treatment process, emphasizing family participation through therapy. In addition to structured visitation and phone contact, the program allows patients and their families to work through a crisis, quickly stabilize and return to the appropriate level of care after discharge.

Discharge Planning: The individual’s case coordinator begins discharge planning upon admission by developing goals and plans for a transition to a less intensive level of treatment to include:

  • ECT
  • Partial hospitalization program
  • Intensive outpatient treatment
  • Traditional outpatient services
